My favorite record store when I was a kid was Licorice Pizza. They had the best new wave section. I actually worked for a chain of stores called the Wherehouse (their radio and tv ads would blare: "Where? At the WHEREHOUSE!" They started as a head shop and by the time I worked there at the ripe old age of 18 (also the birth of the video rental revolution) I was in their management training program and they told us they wanted to be the "McDonald's of the video rental industry". We actually had a pornography section in our video departments, VHS or Beta! I worked at a shitty little mall store in Downey for a while as an asst. mgr. and by then I had soured on the job. I'd play Nina Hagen's "Fearless" to the shock and concern of customers and employees alike when I felt like being obnoxious (and my a-hold g.m. or the other asst. mgr. weren't around). One Christian girl who was a metal head (go figure) accused Nina Hagen of being a demon. Good times!
