Thanks for exploring the nuance. The answer is yes: you can and must accept any problematic elements of these movies to understand & factor in the context of when they were made and what they believed they were allowed to explore and express. We gain nothing now by dismissing content out of hand that does not conform to contemporary values or expectations. We continue to make progress and all the LGBTQ+ films along the timeline reflect the point in that timeline from which they emerged. One of my faves is Parting Glances which provided well drawn queer characters for me to use in my construction of myself - in 1986! I was 20 it had a huge impact on me. Going back further, the character of Donald in Eyes of Laura Mars was a no-bullshit, don't fuck with me openly queer man with a successful career in the NYC fashion world. Sure, he gets murdered...but it was 1978, I was 12 and I took what I could get from this character, who wasn't creepy, wasn't a pedo, wasn't a predator and dealt with straight people as if they were equals. Thanks for the read.
